Jewels of the Drift takes an aerial perspective on the scattered fragments of an ice floe, each piece glowing like a gemstone against the deep blue-black of the Antarctic waters. From above, the scale of Antarctica dissolves into pattern and light. With Jewels of the Drift, I wanted to isolate the beauty of the smallest ice fragments—the last remnants of ancient glaciers before they return to the sea. By using the high contrast of a dark ocean and bright, backlit ice, I created a composition that feels less like a landscape and more like a constellation, highlighting the precious, fleeting nature of these frozen forms.
